{obsess} about

As I have mentioned on my about page, I am very easily obsessed. Once I have an interest in mind, I must pore over anything and everything I can get my hands on that is vaguely related to the topic.

At 12 I was OBSESSED with Gone with the Wind.  The drama and tragedy suited my melodramatic adolescent soul.  I read the book and the sequel… I watched the movie, I saved my pennies for a collectors edition Scarlett O’Hara barbie doll that I found an advert for in the TV Guide.

When I was 14 I was totally obsessed with Italy.  I tried to teach myself Italian, and the only evidence of that fiasco is one sentence:

C’è stato un incidente

Which translates to: ‘There has been an accident.”  So I am set if I ever meet with great catastrophe while visiting Italy…hmmm… great.

When I was 20, and had just finished university, I was totally obsessed with aligning my skills with my passions and finding a career path that would make me wildly rich and happy.  I consumed every career advice book on the market… not knowing it would be much later that I would finally realise that if I was to follow my heart I wouldn’t be able to follow a traditional career path, and I am still learning about this one..

At 23 my husband and I were engaged and I spent the next 18 months obsessively planning our wedding.  I loved every minute of it, and even considered becoming an event planner.

When I was 25 my best friend and I went to England for 6 months and I obsessively planned our trip.

At 26 I was pregnant with Ava and inhaled every single piece of information about childbirth and child-rearing imaginable.

Now, at 30, I have new obsessions – including those I would consider my missions: how to raise a happy and healthy family and how to achieve a careful balance between nurturing my children the best way I can and also fulfilling my own creative aspirations.

There are also a few more frivolous ones: snail mail, pinterest, photography, lovely stationery, embroidery hoops, Disney (*embarrassed cough*), a brief and ill-advised obsession with running a half-marathon… and on it goes.

So, for the obsess series, I thought it would be fun to dedicate a detailed post once a month to a little rant about whichever obsession I am currently delighting in.  Oh, what fun!

How about you?  Do you have any particular obsessions… you know, those things you just can’t get enough of!?  What exactly makes your heart sing?

Hi Hana! I’m easily obsessed, too. :) My current obsessions include (but are not limited to): blogging (and today specifically, switching over to, spoken word poetry, Steven Pressfield, Rob Bell, getting the apartment (that we just moved into) in order, painting, Batman, all things pregnancy, and couponing and saving money on groceries.

Hey Brandy, that is a fair amount of obsessions!! Good luck with the wordpress move and the apartment sorting! I’ve ordered The Art of War from my local library so I am likely to get a Steven Pressfield obsession very soon too. I’m so intrigued with couponing – we don’t have coupons in New Zealand, but I have seen american TV shows where people have shown how you can get a whole trolley of groceries for $15! Amazing!
