{make} A Dolls House update

Do you remember a little while ago I shared my plans for giving my old dolls house a little spruce up for Ava?  Well, Ava turns four in just under three weeks, and so I have been busily planning the makeover just in time for her birthday.

Just a little reminder, this is what the dolls house did look like:

So far, Barry has sanded everything back for me, and it has had an undercoat applied… while I’ve been busy doing the fun stuff: picking ‘wallpaper’, paint and flooring options!!

Here’s what I’ve decided on:

What do you think?  I’m going to use delta blue as my exterior paint colour, and energy yellow will be the exterior trim.

The interior paint colours will be ottoman, conch and dust storm (the girls love pink so I’ll be using it in two rooms).  All the paint is from Resene (don’t you think it would be a fun job coming up with names for paint?!)… I bought up a bunch of test pots when they had a 50% off sale a few weeks ago.

And those lovely prints I’ll be using as wallpaper?  Those are from a range of wrapping paper by the oh so adorable Love Mae.  They’re an Australian business, who make the sweetest wall decals and wrapping paper.  Their products are especially perfect for my little project as they have that soft and sweet vintage vibe going on, which will work perfectly when the girls throw all their Sylvanian gear into the dolls house.

They’ve  just added this lovely set of pantry labels to their collection which I’m itching to get my hands on!  Oh, and for those of you interested in my Local Adventure, you’ll be pleased to know that they are a company after my own heart and source all their supplies from within a 100km radius of their business base. Impressive, right!?

I had a few mini canvases left over from a pack I had bought for the girls to use for Fathers Day, and so I decided to make mini mood boards for each of the rooms, just to make sure all the combinations would work together.

I’m going to use felt (from Giant Dwarf) as carpet in two of the rooms.  I’m still deciding on colours, but have narrowed it down to pacific or canary in the ottoman/floral clusters room… and as I’ve ruled out flamingo as to pink, I must decide between camelia or wasabi for the dust storm/pink posies room.  For the other two rooms I’m using iron-on wooden floorboards I found here.

So, for the next few weeks, I’ll be busily painting, glueing and cutting paper to size… oh, and probably my fair share of quietly cursing too!  I can’t wait to see it all finished though, and hope it works out to be somewhat like what I am dreaming of.

    Hi Hana,

Wow your doll house project looks like so much fun! Don’t you just love being a designer? Especially when you only have your own taste and style to consider, lol. I’m sure your daughter is going to love it. What i really love is that it was once yours as a child. I am saving my daughter’s wood dollhouse for her and I hope her children play with it too. So much of kids toys are plastic disposable pieces of junk today. We are going through their books right now trying to decide what to giveaway and what to keep. Its hard to decide what to keep for 20+ years or so, (she is only 8 and may not have kids, or a girl) it makes you wonder if its worth it. Then I see your project and I say, YES! Yes it is.

Hi Elle, I am so sentimental and find it really difficult to let go of things… but since having the girls I’ve found that I’ve had to get better and more selective, as we seem to accumulate things so quickly now! But, I definitely agree that there are some things (whether they are toys, clothes or books) that are so special they should be kept. H xo

Thanks so much Megan! The mood boards were heaps of fun… the dolls house is driving me slowly crazy with all the little fiddly bits… it is really neat seeing it come together though, and I see the end is near! H xo

[…] We were up early, checking to see if those birthday fairies had visited.  Turns out they had!  We tried to keep the presents as homemade as possible this year.  Barry built a set of doll’s bunks, and I made some mattresses and pillows to fit.  I also had great fun making over my old doll’s house.
